Since Windows does not have WebP image support out of the box, you will need to download and install the Setup program for WebP Codec for Windows (WebpCodecSetup.exe) which was developed by Google.

You will need to reboot before changes take affect. After a reboot you will be able to view webp thumbnails & the preview pane in Windows Explorer just like you are used to doing for any other standard image format.

The featured image on this page is a WebP and the efficiency talk about it is true. The original PNG image was 327 KiB which was reduced to 71 KiB in WebP format for a total reduction of 78% with no visual quality sacrifice.

If you have any questions regarding the WebP format or codec I recommend you check out https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/faq first. If you're looking for the libwebp library or binary tools for webp management, see Downloading and Installing WebP.
